GPU PhysX in Darkest of Days: full version

without comments

We’ve uploaded new PhysX comparison video for Darkest of Days PC retail. Released only two days ago, this game drags player through different time periods, from Pompei to World War 2.  B-quality title, but gives unique apportunity to use futuristic weapons in the past. At least it worth a try.

Comparison screenshots coming soon.

GPU PhysX in Warmonger

without comments

While completing profiles for old PhysX games, we’ve added PhysX video for Warmonger – Operation: Downtown Destruction title. Developed by Net Devil in collaboration with Ageia for original PhysX PPU, Warmonger is mediocre multiplayer-oriented FPS, available for free download at GeForce PowerPack #2.

Our Warmonger PhysX info mini-site is located here

Note: You can disable GPU PhysX content for this title, so it’s nearly unplayble without nvidia GPU/Ageia PPU.

WeeklyTube #1 – pilot entry

without comments

We gonna try to launch something new today – weekly (every wednesday) overview of most interesting and informative PhysX related videos, which we’ve picked out from  YouTube, Vimeo, and others free video hosting services – called WeeklyTube.

This week YouTube is fully packed with copies of Batman: Arkham Asylum PhysX trailer – you can see it in a post below. Let’s find out what passed unnoticed.

Cloth + Tearing by Mike20151

Interesting video, showing tearable cloth physics inside PhysX SDK. This scene is not included with standart SDK package, but custom made.

Joint Task Force PhysX Trailer 1/2 by Sonnensurfer

Echo from the past. Originally, PhysX SDK based RTS title Joint Task Force was supposed to support Ageia PPU hardware acceleration, but in fact only this trailer remain as result.

New Batman Arkham Asylum PhysX trailer

without comments

Gamersdomain.org (along with other websites) has revealed new trailer for Batman: Arkham Asylum, which seems to be official promo video from Nvidia.

Variety of GPU PhysX effects can be seen there, like good old dynamic paper, steam, different types of destructible objects and cloth simulation.

New PhysX screenshots are also available, you can find them, for example, here

Finally, you can check out our PhysX comparison video for Batman: Arkham Asylum demo, if you haven’t seen it yet.

PC version of Batman: Arkham Asylum will be released on September 18.

GPU PhysX in Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2

with 2 comments

We’ve uploaded PhysX comparison video for Ghost Recon Advanced Warfigter 2. Developed by GRIN for PC, this game came out in 2007, featuring Ageia PhysX support, and was augmented with GPU physics processing later via PhysX driver update. Still looks decent.

Our GRAW2 PhysX info mini-site is located here

Note: For this comparison video (and for others too), we are using comparison sign “PhysX ON” vs “PhysX OFF” just for brevity. More properly it must sound like “extra hardware accelerated effects ON” vs “extra hardware accelerated effects OFF”,  as PhysX SDK itself is working it both cases, calculating ragdolls and other standart physics stuff on CPU.

Note#2: This game was made with Ageia PPU support in mind, and some effects can’not be directly applied to GPU PhysX reality (for example, setting PhysX option to “Extreme” will add some destructible objects, but their rigid body parts will be calculated on CPU in any way)

John Carmack speaking about hardware PhysX at QuakeCon 2009

with one comment

John Carmack, Id Software Technical Director,  always have no special sympathy for dedicated hardware Ageia PhysX.

He called it “bad idea” in 2007, and he didn’t change his mind since then:

“I hope Nvidia didn’t pay a whole lot of money for them” – ended John.

Thankfully,  all this negative talk is related to old, dedicated Ageia PPU idea. Carmack still didn’t reveal his opinion about GPU PhysX.

Edit: We can see, that author of this video is now trying to misinform people by renaming this video to “JC on hardware accelerated (GPU) PhysX” while Carmack was talking about Ageia PhysX PPU, without any clear word about current HW PhysX by Nvidia.  Don’t be confused.

Edit2: And I get blocked during discussion. It seems that I was right.
