EVE Online Incarna will use APEX Clothing

with 26 comments

According to Nvidia GDC 2010 sessions plan, next major add-on for EVE Online, popular sci-fi space MMO game, known as “Incarna” or “Walking on Stations” will use APEX Clothing module for character clothing simulation.

Physically Simulated Clothing in Eve Incarna Using NVIDIA APEX

In this session, we will demonstrate how CCP added physically simulated clothing to their Eve Incarna characters using NVIDIA’s APEX Clothing. We will demonstrate, step by step, the full authoring pipeline, from DCC tools to final integration into the game engine. This session introduces the full NVIDIA APEX suite of artist friendly tools and runtime libraries (Clothing, Destruction, Particles, Turbulence & Vegetation), which significantly speed up creation and inclusion of scalable, dynamic content without a large engineering effort.

Previosly know as “Ambulation”, than “Walking on Stations” and now “Incarna” project is supposed to pare capsuleer pilots out of their ships and put them into stations – for the first time. (currently, players have no ability to control their actual avatars, only space ships)

  1. The wait is over,… well almost I guess! Can’t wait for this monumental expansion to the EVE universe!

  2. Awesome – cant wait to see my hot brutorgirl runnin around in amamake pts buying skills :D (in lingerie!)

  3. I really wish they didn’t do this. This will be the most carebearish addition to the game so far – and if they mess it up – probably a good reason to stop playing.

C’mon. Real tactical briefing before CTA in the middle of the night (with coffee cup – in real life, and Quafe – in game) that’s all we need ;)

  6. It’s CCP game, and they can do with it as they wish. I liked not being able to walk around, as it made the universe seem very impersonal and very cold. Which is the attitude of the game anyway. I agree with Baker that it is a bit carebearish, but you could always not walk around.

If, however, this leads to an influx of 12 year olds and other assorted trash from other MMOs I’m going to stop being a manufacturerer and get my pirate on.

  7. What Lord Ghidorah said.
Such an influx could indeed lead to a replacement income for Tritanium.

so even if there’ll be such an influx, they’ll either be forced to grow up or leave – the EVE universe is a harsh one… think of the spiking sales of small vessels due to them getting popped all the time! But i can think of a downside, too: the number of scammers trying to fool those hordes of unexperienced players will rise sky high :/ As if Jita local wasn’t a pain in the ass already.
And who doesn’t like ambulation can just stick with the old interface. CCP already said there wil be no need to walk around for repairs etc.

  11. @Weynard Yep that sounds like more ISK from trade, and more victims to kill. I’m totally into it.
On the other hand, I cant wait to open my matar bar in Jita :]

  12. I think it’s a huge benefit to the RP community which is one of CCP’s favourite aspects of the game.

Maybe it’ll make RPers less tardy.

But for me I doubt I’ll get out of my ship much but I think I’d enjoy the social aspect it might bring and I’d enjoy to customize my character more than a picture from 2004.

  13. I agree with Lord @ Phi, if this brings an influx of the kiddie’s i can most def.(Gar-on-tea)hehe the pirate’s will come out of the woodwork and a new replacement income source will be found…..lol. CCP will have to dicover new systems and nebula’s to make room for the 12 million kiddies that will flux into eve.so far i love eve, reason being no kid’s and if there are kids that i have ran into i didnt noticed.Like in everquest and World of Warcraft everyother character is a 12-18 yr old playing maturity has gone out the window.Would hate to see that happen to Eve but again if the influx comes the pirates will fly ! MuHahahahaha-:)p

  14. Sidahan, I love EVE myself. It’s my refuge from flaming retards. The reasonable part of me says that because of EVEs brutality (EVE: Everyone versus Everyone) they wouldn’t last long and complain it’s too hard. But there is a paranoid part of me that just doubts this is an actual advancement. And I don’t plan on using it. But CCP haven’t failed me so far, so I’ll give it a shot and be more open minded about it.

    No harm in trying right?

  16. Carebearish? LOL. Don’t underestimate CCP’s glee in providing us players with yet another dark, harsh environment in which to conduct our nefarious deeds. Nor their willingness to include content to encourage that.

  18. THis is an advancment to the game universe, who really cares if Incarna brings lots of kids? they can walk how much they want, in space, inside a spaceship the things run so far different, it keeps the game same to me, people walk, pilots fly and shoot, but i am very curious to see if incarna will bring new “flesh and bones” missions, it must be interesting, CCP could another way to play, different one and new ships (frigs, cruisers, bcs and bss), like people carriers and stuff like that, so, if someone does not want to be a pilot, that person could play only icarna style or both, walking and flying.
    Hope the things get greater!!

  20. I see this feature as being like anything else in the game, you can pursue it or not. There’s plenty to keep everyone busy. I also quote the dev blog about voice adding “fonts’ to disguise your voice. “This feature will in no way be abused.” ….uh… right.

  21. Used to have the walking in stations during Earth n Beyond 4-5 years ago, worked well then, can not see a reason why it should not work now

ATI card users will still be able to play the game ?, got nvidia, shame that dust sub game is limited to consoles only, a bit of walking fps in stations or planets could be fun :)

  22. lol carebearish, CCP has already said that Incarna will be dark and nefarious as any other part of eve, their not gonna throw in a disney world, we’re talking casinos and strip clubs, not barbi’s wonderland.

I just hope they go far with the darkness :) I wanna run and operate a strip club… i mean i already transport hookers and strippers around in my cargo, why not get them to earn some damn isk.

  24. “ATI card users will still be able to play the game?” -Jay

NVIDIA APEX is for workstations with Quadro cards, so basicly the stuff that the use to make games.
Got nothing to do with the eve client running on your computer.

  25. As an off-and-on EVE player since beta, I am really looking forward to Incarna. I’ve played a number of different angles of this game (Mining, manufacturing, Agent missions, Trade routes/Indy ship jockey, PvE, PvP, Fleet battles, Pirating), and am looking forward to this new angle.
