Hawken's first Closed Beta Event is taking place right now, servers will be available all weekend and will close Monday night, October 29 at 11:59 PM PDT. While Beta is still closed, it is fairly simple to obtain a key on various websites and giveaways - so did we to check if Hawken can already offer us something GPU PhysX related.

Unfortunately, despite a presence of "PhysX particles" option in game settings, none of the extra physical effects are available currently - particles are simply falling through geometry and smoke is static.

At least, we made a few screenshots for you to enjoy.

Gameplay wise, Hawken is not a robot simulator, as one may think, but very fast and action packed shooter in mech entourage.
Pretty fun to play Smiley

Shame the effects weren't active, those screenshots are looking good though. Looking forward to playing this one Cheesy

Some time ago, I saw a video (now removed) showing some of the PhysX effects in Hawken's Alpha. So, maybe another round of beta will include them again, before final release.
On a technical side, Hawken is using UE3/UDK with APEX 1.2 - thrilled to see how it will work  Smiley

As interesting note, Hawken Closed Beta 2 client already includes some of the GPU PhysX effects.

Following our previous preview, we have also examined the status of the PhysX effects in Hawken with latest CB3 patch.

Bad news: there no any of the advanced physics effects yet, like those driven by APEX Turbulence fields. Only particles.
Good news: existing PhysX particle effects were reworked and improved. They are now looking more accurate and natural, shooting an enemy mechs don't spawn giant black pieces of rocks (or whatever it was), performance is also improved.

We are pleased to see the progress and now are more confident that final game will have something to surprise us  Smiley
